Endorsers

Tim Louis: Former City Councillor

"Jamie Lee is a person who makes us think - she raises issues and asks blunt questions. She won't let the City get complacent. She works hard and, in my experience, she 'walks her talk'."

Darren Bruce: Mr Gay Canada

"I support Jamie Lee for parks board for several reasons. Firstly, because I agree with her that the city needs more parks. With this, I believe that without a direct connection to nature, people will not develop an appreciation or respect for the environment. Secondly, she supports the construction of a new LGBT Centre in Vancouver, one that is visible and accessible to all. I was openly gay for almost two years before I even knew that the Centre existed. I probably could have used some of their resources when I was coming out! Finally, she has drive, passion, leadership skills, and a caring and colourful personality to turn Vancouver into a fun, vibrant, and accepting city for all."

Colin Topham and Ann Takagi Topham: Directors, ITT Trading Inc., DTES residents and business owners

"We have worked with Jamie Lee Hamilton on many political campaigns and recognize the passion that Jamie Lee shares for the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona neighborhoods. Her grassroots level understanding of the underprivileged is a perspective that is far too often missing in the political perspective. As 3 year residents of the DTES we share Jamie Lee's passion and commitment to solving the complex issues that face the DTES including getting youth, especially aboriginal youth, in programs that will promote more awareness and keep youth away from the many unfortunate dangers of the DTES.

XtraWest Newspaper

The Xtrawest community paper has endorsed Jamie Lee Hamilton in its November 6 issue. Robin Perelly of Xtrawest states, "I am going to vote for Jamioe Lee Hamilton for park board because every governing board needs a gutsy voice of dissent."

Art Lee: Former Member of Parliament for Vancouver-East:

As my friend, Jamie Lee Hamilton tells me what are the hopes and aspirations of the Downtown Eastside. She is well aware and very knowledgable of the social issues of  homelessness, poverty, and drug use. She has set for her priorities "green and public space", "arts and recreational activities", "additional programs for youth, families, and senirors", and the "promotion of outdoor and recreational activities".  I join with Mark James and Philip Owen in asking Vancouver to elect Jamie Lee Hamilton to the Vancouver Parks Board.

Annelise Sorg: No Whales in Captivity

Annelise Sorg yesterday in a public release endorsed Jamie Lee Hamilton saying " I support independent Jamie Lee Hamilton, who is running for park board who has spoken against keeping whales in captivity."

John Whistler: Green Environmentalist and Community Activist

"I have watched Jamie Lee Hamilton over the years act as a tireless advocate for marginalized communities on some of the most difficult issues. I am amazed how she able to clearly articulate alternative perspectives that I had previously never considered. Often these perspectives are not popular however she can demonstrate why they should be accommodated. Our elected politicians need to have the skill to critically look at the various component of every decision that is before them. Jamie Lee has this skill.  I believe Jamie Lee would be an excellent Park Board Commissioner and she would be voice to ensure Vancouver Parks are sustainable, equitable and reflective of the diversity of the City".

Colleen Nystedt: President & CEO, MovieSet Inc.

"Three years have passed since the last civic election, when I first met Jamie Lee Hamilton. Since our first fateful meeting, I have come to appreciate Jamie Lee as one of the most passionately committed individuals I have ever met. Her love of this City, and persistent representation of the disenfranchised is beyond reproach. Vancouver will benefit from electing Ms. Hamilton to the Parks Board. She will most certainly work hard on our collective behalf. "

Adriane Carr: Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada

"Jamie Lee Hamilton has been a leading voice for the voiceless in our community for many years. These days the work of a Parks Board Commissioner touches on many facets of life in our City and on urgent issues such as homelessness, addiction and prostitution which are manifest in our parks and green spaces. Ms. Hamilton would be a strong and compassionate spokesperson for everyone touched by those issues, and an able representative for her own neighbourhood, the park-deprived North East area of Vancouver. I am pleased to personally endorse Jamie Lee Hamilton’s independent candidacy for Vancouver Parks Board Commissioner."

Councillor Elizabeth Ball: City of Vancouver

"Jamie Lee Hamilton knows that parks programs can help all youth improve their lives. Jamie Lee is a determined advocate for youth in the inner city. Ms Hamilton works hard to improve the lives of all those who live in the DTES. She believes the Park board can bring positive change in the neighborhood. Her past record as an advocate would bring exciting new ideas to the table. I'm proud to endorse her campaign"

Terry Costa, Mirateca Arts Management

"Jamie Lee Hamilton's energetic spirit and vivacity towards making the world a better place, for all, is a force to be reckon with. I hope that she can prove that one does not need a political party support in order to govern. Here's to change for the better with candidates that are not afraid to step outside of the boundaries."

Irwin Oostindie, Creator: Under the Volcano, Executive Director: W2 Arts Centre

"I support my Downtown Eastside neighbour Jamie Lee because she is a defender of our community, and a promotor of arts and culture in Vancouver's parks and public realm. I support Jamie Lee Hamilton because her voice is needed on Vancouver's Park Board, and Park Board will achieve better results when it reflects the true diversity of our City."

Don Larsen, Founder of Crab Park and Water for Life Society

"I have worked with the Central Waterfront Coalition, to stop the Waterfront located Whitecaps Stadium. It would ruin the community nature of Crab Park at Portside. We understand Jamie Lee Hamilton believes likewise and endorse her as a preferred candidate."

Alan Herbert, Former Vancouver City Councillor

"I am endorsing Ms. Jamie Lee Hamilton’s run for a Parks Board position in the upcoming Civic Election.

In speaking with Jamie Lee Hamilton it is refreshing to find someone who wants to take leadership on the more serious issues facing Vancouver ’s Parks.

Jamie Lee Hamilton knows our Parks play a strong role in our civic identification and does not want that prized position threatened. But Jamie Lee Hamilton is also well aware that many of Vancouver ’s Parks are also home to some of our most gnawing civic problems.

Homelessness: How many people, children included are using our parks as a place to live. Drugs: Walk through many parks, not just on the Downtown East Side, and you will find used needles and drug paraphernalia littering the grounds.

Jamie Lee Hamilton understands the connectivity of homelessness and drug use in the Parks and she wants to take a leadership role on these issues. If she wins a Parks Board position that is her primary intent. She also understands that much of these and other related tough problems are as much related to uncomfortable and old legislation as they are to money.

Leadership to bring old laws up to date is long overdue; someone must take interest on the issue of changing old laws. Issues that are social and medical need to be reassessed for possible removal from the criminal column.

Jamie Lee Hamilton was one of the first persons to comment that there are tough truths civic leaders have to learn from the Pickton murders. While he is behind bars, his crimes continue to be perpetrated by others. That need not be the case.

Jamie Lee Hamilton was one of the first persons to understand the breakthrough Vancouver had in establishing the ‘Insite’ safe-injection site and would take leadership in exploring the ‘Insite’ model developed by former Mayor Philip Owen with a view to expanding it to better address an ugly issue.

Jamie Lee Hamilton says it is time for politicians to take bold leadership chances. It is time to obtain legislation on issues like these as Vancouver ’s Parks have become home to many who are homelessness; drug use and even prostitution.

Jamie Lee Hamilton wants to return the Parks of Vancouver to the public for their intended uses – recreation, festivals, heritage and places to enjoy a sunny day -- but she understands that that can only happen through bold and innovative leadership.

Do you believe it is time we addressed these issues? Jamie Lee Hamilton does. Help her do this. Support Jamie Lee Hamilton in her run for aposition for the Vancouver Parks Board slate in the November Civic Election."

Mark James, Prominent Vancouver Businessman

"I am endorsing Jamie Lee Hamilton's bid for an Park's Commissioner Nomination for this fall's Vancouver civic election. Jamie lee is intimately aware of the needs and desires of Vancouver's citizenry in its quest for a vibrant and livable city. She clearly understands the complexities of creating a world class city and how our parks / community centers and outdoor spaces are an integral and vital component of that process.

Jamie Lee is open minded and willing to explore divergent discussion and opinions from all corners of the political spectrum. She is a team player, consensus builder and fair minded. She will make a superb park's commissioner"

Lenora Hayman & Dorothy Brennan

Dorothy & I would like to thank you for the great evening at the Chapel of the Arts. We need a person like yourself on the Parks Board who will speak up and get something done for the downtrodden on the East side.

Vancouver is rated as one of the best cities is the world, unfortunately some of our citizens are not able to live up to that standard.

So here is a toast to the roast for the hostess with the mostess.

Paige Latin, Founder PACE Society

As the founder of PACE (Prostitution Alternatives Counselling & Education) Society and a former Parks Board employee I wholeheartedly recommend Jamie Lee Hamilton as Parks Board Commissioner! Having first met Jamie Lee in the early 1990's I found her to be an outspoken advocate who was not afraid to stand up for what was right. Jamie Lee is open-minded, honest and caring with excellent decision making skills. As Parks Board Commissioner I know that Jamie Lee Hamilton would make the city a greener space for all.

Claudia Ferris, Hastings Sunrise

As a parent and park advocate, I have pushed for progressive government policies and funding. Jamie Lee Hamilton has always supported these efforts and can be counted on to do the right thing. She is a passionate, flamboyant fighter for our community, and we need caring people like Jamie Lee to represent us as we struggle to keep Vancouver parks public, green and accessible to everyone.

David Wong, Former Chair and Spokesperson, Friends of Fraserview Forest Founding member, Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC

Jamie, along with her family, worked hard to help save our early Kiwassa and Strathcona communities - thus initiating the city of green neighbourhoods that Vancouver is known for today.

Jamie is smart, witty and progressive thinking. She has proven over and over again, her dedication to our City and to our citizens - no matter what the demographics. This is what we have been looking for - a bright, fun individual who is both knowledgeable and has a proven track record with civic issues!

Dr Becki Ross, Professor of Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies at UBC, long-time feminist, queer activist, defender of queer porn, trans liberation, and reproductive choice and author of the soon-to-be released book, Burlesque West: Showgirls, Sex, and Sin in Postwar Vancouver

Kevin Dale McKeown Proprietor / PublicityPlus Event Marketing Former WestEnder managing editor and Georgia Straight gay community columnist.

I have known Jamie Lee Hamilton throughout her entire career -- often as an ally, sometimes as an opponent, always as a friend. Jamie Lee's passionate advocacy on behalf of all marginalized and disadvantaged communities and individuals is well known. Her presence on the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will give a voice to many who have seldom felt adequately represented in that arena. I am pleased to endorse her candidacy.

Patrick and Bryan, Owners Elbow Room Cafe

Jamie Lee is a fixture in Vancouver's LGBT community. She has done so much for so many and she does it with class, style and grace. Having Jamie Lee Hamilton elected to the Park Board would certainly bring forward neglected issues. We endorse her campaign.

Sandra Laframboise, Registered Psychiatric Nurse

It is important that Aboriginal woman (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) have a voice in politics. Jamie Lee Hamilton advances the aspirations and interests of all First Nation, Métis and Inuit people in their efforts to achieve common goals. She advocates for increased accessibility of services not only for Aboriginal but all people who are in need in the Downtown East Side.

It is with pleasure and honor that the Dancing To Eagle Spirit Society and myself Chief Sandra Laframboise put our voice behind Jamie Lee's campaign of being elected on the Parks Board in the upcoming civic election and therefore endorse her campaign.

Dan Grice, Green Party Candidate, Vancouver Quadra

Jamie Lee Hamilton is an outspoken advocate with an intimate knowledge of Vancouver's needs. In a time when we need to be extra vigilant about protecting green space, I am confident that Jamie will raise important issues. She has a unique voice that will be an asset to the park board.

Michael R Harding, former Executive director of the LGBT Centre

Jamie Lee Hamilton runs for the Parks Board Indefatigable, relentless, and certainly not one to avoid controversy, Jamie Lee Hamilton has decided to stand for Parks Board. Should she succeed, Jamie Lee will bring the spirit to Queen Boudicca to civic politics in Vancouver. Never known to follow the status quo, Jamie Lee can be counted on to pierce even the most mundane topics with her unique and impassioned opinions. If this is Round 1, I am intrigued to know in which arena Round 2 will take place. Tally Ho!
